ZRP Officers Sentenced to 15 Months In Prison For Vicious Assault
Harare Magistrate Farai Gwitima convicted five Zimbabwe Republic Police officers of assault and sentenced them to an effective 15 months in prison each.
The Magistrate sentenced the officers to 18 months in prison each before suspending 3 months on condition of good behaviour.
The officers; Livingston Zvimba, Tendai Musungambira, Sunday Nyaude, Khululekani Dale and Evans Mashonganyika had mounted a spirited defence claiming that they could not be held accountable since the incident had occurred late at night, in poor visibility.
The court heard that the officers assaulted Yvonne Magora with open hands and batons for standing at a road intersection, where they were controlling traffic.
This forced her husband, Washington Gezana to intervene to rescue her. The officers then turned on Gezana and assaulted him with batons, open hands and an unknown object, which injured his right eye.
Upon realising that they had injured Gezana the officers jumped into their service vehicle and drove off. Gezana’s eye was subsequently removed, as it had been severely damaged
